Retailers Lead The Way At Blas na hÉireann Awards
The annual Blas na hÉireann Awards took place in Dingle at the weekend, with Ireland's leading supermarket groups again leading the way in terms of awards. SuperValu performed exceptionally well this year, winning 26 awards in total, of which nine were Gold Awards.
87% Of Irish Adults Consume Hot Beverages Daily
The majority (87%) of Irish adults consume hot beverages such as tea, coffee or hot chocolate daily, according to the latest Consumer Insights study from Empathy Research. Of 950 participants, the older age groups were the most likely to consume hot beverages, with the majority of 45-54 year olds (93%) and 55+ year olds (93%) doing so every day, compared to 79% of 18-35 year olds and 88% of 35-44 year olds.
Retailers Anticipating Small Growth In 'Free From' Category This Year
Retailers are anticipating moderate growth from the 'free from' category this year, according to a survey carried out by Retail Intelligence, Food & Hospitality Ireland and the CSNA. 63% of respondents to the survey said they anticipated less than 10% growth in sales of 'free from' products this year, however 30% said that they anticipated between 30% and 50% growth. Just 7% of respondents predicted sales growth of more than 50% in the category.
ISA: Spirits Sales Down 9.6% Due To Successive Excise Increases
The Irish Spirits Association (ISA) has announced that Revenue clearance figures show the overall spirits market is down 9.6% in the year to June, with Irish whiskey sales down 19.3%.
Aldi and Lidl Ad Spend Drives Market Growth
Retail Aldi and Lidl account for around 47% of the total advertising spend by Irish retailers according to the latest ‘Supermarket Ad Tracker' report which is produced by Checkout magazine by research company Nielsen.
Londis Toasts 60 Years In Style At Retailing Excellence Awards Event
ADM Londis toasted its 60th anniversary in style with a major event at Dublin's Doubletree by Hilton Hotel last Friday, at which its 2014 Londis Retailing Excellence Awards were presented. Londis Adare was the big winner on the night, taking the Londis Overall Store of the Year Award, as well as the Londis Foodmarket Store of the Year Award.
Tesco chiefs to stack shelves to 'reconnect' with customers
Thousands of head office and corporate staff at Tesco UK will be sent to work on the shop floor in the run-up to Christmas as part of an initiative by new boss Dave Lewis. The scheme will see more than 4,000 employees - including Mr Lewis and other senior executives at the beleaguered retailer - stacking shelves and operating tills to try to reconnect those running the group with the needs of customers.
A Lidl taste of success
Exclusive behind the scenes access at the hugely profitable discount retailer Lidl reveals why the supermarket chain is growing so fast in bringing in new shoppers. Selling craft beers and taking part in a Dragon's Den-type nationwide TV competition for food producers are the latest tactics that Lidl (Ireland's fifth largest supermarket, according to consumer researchers Kantar Worldpanel) are deploying in the battle for a weekly shopping spend that is thought to be worth about €9bn a year.
Spar plans to create 1,000 jobs as it opens 50 stores
A thousand full and part-time jobs will be created at 50 new Spar outlets around the country over the next two years, marking another boost for the recovering economy. It comes as a $70m (€56m) business investment fund being launched today by Taoiseach Enda Kenny has promised to create 450 jobs in coming years.

Tesco has launched its F&F value Halloween costume range. Starting at €3.75, Tesco said it is the one-stop shop offering parents great value options to get their little ones ready for trick or treating for Halloween.
Tesco Ireland partners with LivingSocial
LivingSocial has become the latest Clubcard partner of Tesco Ireland. It is estimated that LivingSocial has over 500,000 subscribers in Ireland, over 12% of the Irish population. Launched in the Irish market in 2010, LivingSocial has grown to become one of the most successful daily deal sites in Ireland.
Temple Street children's hospital is Tesco's new charity of the year partner
Tesco Ireland has announced Temple Street Children’s University Hospital as its new charity of the year partner until 2016. To kick-start the fundraising, TV presenter Sybil Mulcahy helped to launch ‘Ireland’s Largest Face Painting Day’, which will take place in 146 Tesco stores nationwide from 11 October.
